Book launch and history conference

Stan J O’Reilly of the Wicklow Historical Society will launch his latest book titled “Folklore and the Paranormal” later this month at Rathnew Community Hall.

The book explores the history, heritage, folklore and paranormal of County Wicklow, and would be a welcome addition to any home with Halloween just around the corner.

All profits from the sale of the book will be split between Wicklow Cancer Support and Wicklow RNLI.

The book will officially launch at Rathnew Community Hall at 3:30 p.m. on October 22.

Stan will also be the guest speaker for the upcoming Wicklow Historical Society conference which will be held October 24 at the De La Salle Pastoral Center at 8 p.m.

The topic will be perfect for Halloween as Stan will explore the folklore and paranormal aspects of his forthcoming new book.

Sharing surplus garden produce

Anyone with an extra supply of garden food items can drop it off outside the main entrance to the Brockagh Resource Center in the crate provided to the community.

Free baking apples outside the front door in a container for everyone to have some this week.

mobile library

The Wicklow County Council Mobile Library will be in Roundwood Village on Thursday, October 20 from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. and also from 2:10 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Come join the library. It’s a free service and it’s a fantastic way to choose any book that matches your reading interests.

Wicklow Chamber dinner dance

The Wicklow and District Chamber of Commerce will hold its prestigious Black Tie Chamber Dinner Dance on Friday November 18 in the Great Eastern Pavilion at Tinakilly Country House and Hotel.

The winners of the Business Awards 2022 will also be announced in the evening. Overall, it has been a great year for business in Wicklow Town and surrounding areas, with new businesses opening and old favorites flourishing. The Taste of Wicklow festival also made a triumphant return during the year.

The categories for the 2022 awards are Best Startup Award, Best Professional Service Award, Best Restaurant/Hospitality/Pub Award, Best Retail Award, Best Digital Presence Award, Best Digital Presence Award, Honoring Excellence in the Community Award, Honoring Innovation and Entrepreneurship Award and a Special Recognition Award.

Table tennis takes place at Roundwood Parish Hall on Monday evenings from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Friday’s North/South winners were Kay Smullen Joe Kelly. Iosbel Fenton and Angela Nolan finished second. Elizabeth McCarthy and Teresa Ghalaieny won East/West, with Susie St Laurence and Margo Mulligan second.

Terry Hayes and Kathleen Johnson won North/South on Monday, while Michael and Nell O’Gorman finished second. Joint East/West winners were Ann McCoy and Berni Hamilton and Robert Doyle and Joe Kelly. Kay Smullen and Elizabeth McCarthy finished second.

Eric Levingstone and Robert Doyle won North/South on Wednesday, followed by Heather Sheane and Jane Bradshaw. The joint East/West winners were Marion O’Shaughnessy and Norma Sommers and Marian McNulty and Susan Hill. Martha French and Marie Barrett finished second.

A new adult beginner ukulele choir will begin Tuesday mornings from 10-11 a.m. in Roundwood Church Hall.

Holistic self-defense course

A self-defense class led by Dara Clear, who has practiced martial arts for 30 years, will start at the Brockagh Resource Centre, Laragh on October 25, November 1, 8 and 15 from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.

Practical and holistic approaches to self-protection will be taught throughout the four-night course.

No prior experience necessary. Book early as places are limited.

45 card deck

The Halligan family invites you to the 45th anniversary of The Card Game for Paddy to benefit Roundwood Cancer Support.

It takes place on Sunday, October 23 at Roundwood Parish Hall, beginning at 7 p.m. sharp.

There will be a raffle, and tea and cakes will be served. Admission is €20 per person.
