Or at least a return to the metro area the Bernards called home before heading to the West Coast for work.
Choosing to be closer to his family rather than just living in a “beautiful place”, Kevin Bernard said it was time to return to Edmonton after a few years away.

While their search targeted Sherwood Park, Fort Saskatchewan and Beaumont – they decided they wanted to be close to the big city but preferred to live close by this time – the latter won out. Specifically, it was Elan, one of the newer communities in the area, that caught their eye.

“Just having a whole new community is always nice,” Bernard said, noting that wasn’t the only factor. There was, in no particular order, having a friend nearby – his friend in Beaumont suggested Elan when asked about the new communities there – reasonably close schools and, above all, the French postman.

Bernard’s first language is French, and living in a community like Beaumont with its Franco-Albertan heritage was a primary consideration in establishing new roots.

“I am of French origin,” he added. “It’s really important for us to have a French community.

The Bernards, coincidentally, were in Edmonton visiting and checking out new home opportunities at the time and landed at Elan just days before its opening event in September.

This grand opening saw six show homes unveiled by three builders, including Homes by Avi, with whom they are building.

“Elan is charming and family-friendly with unique and (already) established parks,” said Micah Dueck, Sales Director of Homes by Avi. “Its beautiful French-inspired architecture lends itself to the streetscape and complements the cleverly designed common community spaces.”

The Bernards chose Home by Avi’s Hemsworth model, which measures just over 2,000 square feet and features three bedrooms, 2 1/2 bathrooms and a variety of floor plan options for the single-family home with front garage.

“(Hemsworth’s) open-bottom concept is very well received,” Dueck said of the space that overlooks the Great Hall. “The (overall) line of sight is very well managed and results in a great sense of space. This only speaks of an uninterrupted view, which allows for a thoughtful flow of space and an increase in natural light reaching further into space.

Once the Bernards appreciated what they saw, the decision was made to move forward immediately. They weren’t going to get back to the coast until everything was ready.

Although they haven’t decided on the finishes for the house yet, they are leaning towards a white kitchen, although that may change once they see the design selections they can choose from; they also debate whether to make the lower cabinets lighter and the tops darker.

Meanwhile, ample storage space was one of the reasons for choosing the Hemsworth, as the two secondary bedrooms each have walk-in closets. An upstairs laundry room was also to the Bernards’ taste, as was the long kitchen island and its ample seating.

“When we first saw Elan, it was exciting to see a new subdivision being built,” Bernard said, adding that he and his wife were looking for a home where they could see each other there for years and years. years to come. “New developments usually attract younger families…you grow with the community.

Living the dream

The first phase of Elan will include 118 lots, 56 of which are developments backing onto or overlooking the park space.

“Elan is the culmination of more than half a decade of active engagement with the local community,” said Jonathan Chan, general manager of the Edmonton land division of Dream Unlimited, the community developer. “Beaumont has such a strong identity and it was important for us to live up to its potential and not just bring more of Edmonton to communities outside of its borders. Everything from the emphasis on inviting porches to the quality of public spaces is designed to bring residents together. We wanted to do it right. »

As part of the first phase, Dream has already built park spaces, including Parc Réunis, a 16-acre recreational space at the center of Phase 1. It includes outdoor exercise equipment, play structures wooden building featuring a three-story watchtower, sports court, toboggan hill, and plenty of restaurants and casual seating throughout.

In winter, a ribbon of skating will weave through the entire park system.

“It’s about creating ‘collision’ opportunities in the best sense of the word – a chance to meet neighbors, say hello and get to know the people around you,” Chan said.

Homes by Avi builds duplexes, townhouses and single-family homes with garages in Elan. Prices for these homes start as follows: duplexes in the $470,000 range, townhouses in the $430,000 range, and single-family homes with front garages in the $540,000 range. All prices include GST.
