U.S. Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) is calling on the Biden administration to reopen the northern border and recently encouraged the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to end the vaccination mandate for truckers and travelers.
Tester recently implored Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to eliminate the vaccination mandate for those entering the United States through land ports of entry and fully reopen all land ports on along the Canada-US border in pre-pandemic times.
“We have made significant progress in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, and I continue to encourage all individuals to get vaccinated,” Tester wrote in correspondence to Mayorkas. “However, we also need to fight inflation and improve the economy. That is why I am concerned about the continued restrictions on ground travel that disproportionately affect truckers from Canada responsible for bringing food, agricultural inputs and other vital goods to the United States.
Tester thinks removing restrictions on truckers and increasing trade with Canada are key to improving the country’s supply chain and reducing inflation.
“Reducing restrictions on international travel and restoring hours of operation at our land ports of entry will help the U.S. economy stay strong,” Tester concluded. “I stand ready to help DHS fully reopen the northern border, increase trade, and improve our economy and national security.”
