Paris Saint-Germain have threatened to ban seven of their senior players from the club’s second team in a bid to drive them out, according to reports in France. Manchester United’s new transfer target Mauro Icardi is among seven players who could find themselves playing in the fifth tier of French football if they fail to secure an exit.

Icardi joined former Red Devils midfielder Ander Herrera, Layvin Kurzawa, Julian Draxler, Rafinha, Thilo Kehrer and Idrissa Gueye in being told to train away from the first team. PSG are hoping to downsize the squad under new head coach Christophe Galtier.

Some of the players have been linked with departures, although others have so far not attracted any particular attention. Man Utd have been vaguely suggested as a possible destination for Icardi, amid the Premier League club’s search for attacking reinforcements.

Brazilian midfielder Rafinha is wanted by La Liga side Real Sociedad, while defender Thilo Kehrer has caught the eye of West Ham and Sevilla. Others have been told to find new clubs while they train away from their teammates and could end up playing for the club’s reserve team in National 3 – the fifth tier of French football.

The The telegraph of the day claim that Man Utd have expressed an interest in striker Icardi. The striker saw his playing time limited by the presence of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

Boss Galtier said the door was open for an exit. He said: “I saw Mauro earlier this week. His absence last week was for tactical reasons, I told him that I wanted to reduce the squad size and not work with 25 outfield players. The club is working closely with Mauro to find the best possible solution.

“He had very little playing time and I think it would be best if he got back on track. He didn’t lose everything all at once [he can do] but it’s true that it’s been complicated for two years. Being able to change location, find a more supportive environment, can help you get back on track in your career.
