STOCKHOLM, June 22, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — larry zhang has been named the new senior vice president of the Silicones division of Elkem, a leading global player in fully integrated silicone manufacturing. He will take up his duties with immediate effect and will be based in Shanghai, China.
Mr. Zhang comes from the position of vice president of operations of the Silicones division of Elkem and director of the Asia Pacific Region. He has significant leadership experience in China National Blue Star and holds an engineering degree from Central Southern University. This follows the previously announced appointment of Frederic Jacquin as Elkem’s Senior Vice President for Strategy and Business Development of March 1, 2022.
Elkem is a fully integrated producer of silicon metal with upstream siloxane and downstream specialty silicones. The Silicones division at Elkem has over 4,400 employees, 14 multifunctional manufacturing sites and 13 research and innovation centers worldwide. It offers a full range of silicone solutions for various specialized markets and, in 2021, achieved a turnover of NOK 17.4 billion.

Due to its wide range of application areas, silicone solutions are used in a large number of products and industries, including manufactured goods, building materials, electronics and consumer goods. An electric vehicle contains on average four times more silicones than a traditional car, as the insulation material of choice for EV battery cables. Silicones also enable CO2 reductions equal to nine times production and end-of-life emissions.
In April 2021the board of directors of Elkem has approved a NOK 3.8 billion the strategic expansion of the Xinghuo Silicones plant to China to strengthen Elkem’s position in the fastest growing silicones market and to continue to support the specialization strategy. In addition to supporting Elkem’s specialization and growth strategy, the project will also significantly improve Elkem’s overall cost position and environmental profile based on state-of-the-art technology.
In July 2021Elkem announced the official opening of its new 25 million euros Saint-Fons Research & Innovation Center that of Lyon “Valley of Chemistry” in France, welcoming 120 researchers to work on innovations in partnership with customers, mainly in the fields of circular economy, digitalisation, consumer goods, living comfort and new materials for energy and mobility. Elkem also announced, in October 2021a 36 million euros extension of the capacity of its intermediate silicone upstream units in Roussillon in Francewho in February 2022 received financial support from the French government.
