Deeping Rangers completed a hat-trick of successive United Counties League wins by beating Boston Town at Haydon Whitham Stadium on Saturday.

Will Bird’s late winner secured victory for the Clarets against their fourth-placed visitors who found themselves trailing two goals after just five minutes of the Premier Division North game.

Goals from Marcus Pancho and Luke Steele had given the Clarets a dream start before Boston bounced back to level the contest through Harry Limb and Aboubacar Sylla.

Deeping then had to use his defensive resolve to keep Boston at bay before Bird charged in with an 80th-minute winner that saw the Clarets follow up their recent wins over Pinchbeck and Sleaford with another victory over their Lincolnshire rivals.

Manager Daniel French said: “It was a great win and I will always say three straight wins at any level is a good achievement.

“It was a performance where we raised our levels from the previous two wins. We improved our quality from the Pinchbeck win to the Sleaford game and now this one where we’ve been asked more questions.

“What I liked was the mental side of things after going 2-0 down. We weren’t complacent but, when they came back to 2-2, we made sure we stayed in the game , then we came with some quality in the final third to win it.

“Now it’s about making players believe in consistency because we can compete physically and stand up to the sides.

“What’s in our favor is that we’re in better shape and the depth of our squad shows in the later stages of games.

“We’ve improved by leaps and bounds over the last four or five weeks, which is really nice. The guys deserve it because they’ve worked so hard.”

Rangers got off to a good start breaking the deadlock after just three minutes when Pancho was picked up on the left by a fine pass from Jack Bloodworth.

The winger then left two players in his wake before scoring a fine finish past Boston keeper Ross Woolley.

Deeping’s lead was then doubled two minutes later with Pancho this time the provider as his cross was met by the towering Steele who guided his header past Woolley for his second goal in as many games after their game winner against Sleaford.

The double backhand sparked a response from Boston with Limb flashing a wide kick before the former Stamford striker halved the deficit after 19 minutes.

A free kick was swung into the Deeping box where Richard Ford guided his header into Limb’s path to bring home Boston’s opening goal.

Jones De Sousa had a good opening to restore Deeping’s two-goal advantage on another fine pass from Bloodworth only to fire over it as Ford went close with a header at the other end.

Boston goaltender Woolley needed two attempts to get a free kick from Bird before the Poachers appealed for a penalty disallowed in the first half after a group of bodies from Deeping blocked a shoot.

Boston, clearly aggrieved by the decision to miss the free kick, used their frustration to turn up the heat early in the second half.

It took a last-minute tackle from David Burton-Jones to keep Limb from clearing before the Poachers top scorer offered a decent chance on Lee Beeson’s cross.

Fraser Bayliss snagged another good chance over the crossbar before his low shot brought a clever reaction from goalkeeper Dan Swan.

The equalizer Boston had threatened came as the game entered the final 15 minutes as Sylla was sent running from Limb’s pass and he drilled home his arrival past Swan.

Deeping reacted well to being pegged and Luke Hunnings saw a header clear from a corner from the line by Ryley Thompson before taking the lead with 10 minutes to go.

Substitutes Jake Showler and Ta’i Williams linked up nicely down the left before the latter’s cross was converted from close range by Bird.

Boston’s protests over the scorer’s offside were dismissed and they added pressure in the final stages of the competition.

But Deeping stood firm as they defended well throughout and, when breached, Boston found goaltender Swan in fine form.

He made a superb save to block Limb’s ferocious close shot before repelling another dangerous effort from Sylla as Rangers held on to avenge their opening day loss to the Poachers.

Boss French added: “Our last three 90 minutes have been very physically demanding, as well as being split between Christmas and New Years, but we have held up very well.

“It was a team effort everywhere. The back five were outstanding, Robbie Ellis and Sam Wilson covered so much ground for us while three of the front four scored goals and the substitutes all made an impact when they came on .

“It was a huge result against a top four team and it shows we can compete with the teams up there, but it’s about consistency.”
